Trader checks

As part of the Trading Standards Checked Scheme, Kent County Council (KCC) carries out stringent checks to support only legitimate and reliable businesses and to help residents find safe, reputable traders. Each business on the scheme is thoroughly vetted and assessed against our scheme criteria.

The vetting process

A business who has passed our robust background checks, understands they are required to comply with all relevant UK legislation and they receive support and advice to help them act responsibly, fairly and honestly.

Our scheme vetting includes:

  • Rigorous checks carried out by Trading Standards - checking consumer complaints and non-compliance with legislation.

  • A review of confidential and restricted information supplied by external organisations, public authorities and the police.

  • Credit checks including Insolvency, Bankruptcy and County Court Judgements.

  • Public Liability Insurance check.

  • Verification of registered trading address.

  • Accreditations & Qualification checks of mandatory accreditation and qualifications.

  • Identification checks including official documents and proofs.

  • Checks into company trading history.

  • Open Source checks of information that is freely available in the public domain.

Ongoing monitoring

In addition to these checks, all complaints made to the Citizens Advice consumer service (CACS) about any member of the Trading Standards Checked scheme are monitored continuously. This ensures that a consistently high standard is maintained by our traders throughout their membership, giving you even more confidence when choosing a Trading Standards Checked trader.
